What Causes Bad Breath?

Many patients complain that they sometimes suffer from bad breath, and ask "what can I do about it?"
My usual answer is good oral hygiene which means thorough brushing, flossing and tongue scraping. This removes the majority of odour-causing foods and bacteria from your mouth, but not all.

Odours from foods like garlic, onions, curry, fish and some cheeses may take up to 24 hours to be removed from our blood system. However, eating certain foods can help supresses bad breath.

These foods can help 'take care' of these odours:
  1. Lemons Suck on or nibble the lemon wedges, drink sparkling lemon water or suck on lemon candy (sugarless of course)!
  2. Parsley, rosemary or basil parsley has been inlcuded as a garnish for years and is widely know to remove mouth odours
  3. Apples, pears and carrots beside being sweet they increase your salivary flow to remove food particles from your mouth
  4. Crunch spices like cardamom, coriander and fennel seeds mixed in thirds release oils that will give your mouth an amazing taste.
  5. Mint sprigs ,Cinnamon sticks or gum - with gum be mindful of the sugar content - there are many sugarless gums on the market today
  6. Berries and yogurt. Yogurt twice a day reduce the level of hydrogen sulphide (rotten eggs smell). Start each day with a cup of fruit topped with plain sugar-free yogurt and you may not have to worry about bad breath again.
